Monaco Diamond League: Rhasidat Adeleke wins 400m as Mageean 10th in 2000m

Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke laid down a marker for the Paris Olympics by dominating the 400m at the Diamond League event in Monaco.

The 21-year-old won ahead of Dutch sprinter Lieke Klaver with a time of 49:17, which was just outside her own Irish record.

Adeleke has been in superb form and her first Diamond League victory comes after she claimed European 400m silver in June. That medal came after helping Ireland to a historic 4x400m mixed relay gold in Rome where she also contributed to her country’s silver medal in the women’s 4x400m.

Portaferry’s Ciara Mageean finished 10th in the 2000m, which was won by Jess Hull.

The Australian set a new world record of 5:19.70 to win ahead of Great Britain’s Melissa Courtney-Bryant, who was a distant second with a 5:26.08.

Mageean, who won European 1500m gold in May, started well and was in the top five but faded away as the race progressed.

The 32-year-old recorded a time of 5:43.06.

The opening day of athletics at the Paris Olympics is on Friday, 2 August, one week after the opening ceremony of the Games.
