How Henry Cavill’s ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’ Cameo Happened

Did Marvel have to shell out the big bucks to get Henry Cavill in Deadpool and Wolverine? The film’s director Shawn Levy reveals how the cameo came to life.

Deadpool and Wolverine had plenty of surprises. However, no cameo was perhaps more shocking than Henry Cavill making his Marvel debut as a variant of the Wolverine himself. Most thought the crossover would be impossible. However, according to the film’s director Shawn Levy, it was a surprisingly easy sell to the former DC actor.

“If we’re going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillerine,” Levy explained in a recent chat with Variety. “Which Ryan [Reynolds] coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term.”

“[Henry Cavill] said ‘yes’ right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.”

Shawn Levy certainly came with the right intentions, as Henry Cavill’s cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine was received with as much affection as it took to make. Too much affection, perhaps. In the wake of Cavill’s appearance as Wolverine, fans have been calling for Marvel to make him the official Weapon X of the MCU. But could that actually be in the cards?

Henry Cavill’s Future In The Marvel Universe

It’s clear that fans have responded well to Henry Cavill’s cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine. While this may be enough to sell audiences on the idea of him as the iconic mutant, it may not be enough to sell Marvel. An old rumor from while Shawn Levy was still assembling his box office smash suggests that the studio is looking to stay away from Wolverine in their upcoming X-Men reboot.

Of course, this doesn’t take into account Henry Cavill’s busy schedule. While the actor has stepped away from The Witcher, he’s currently involved in adapting Warhammer 40k for streaming and theaters. This may not leave him much time to play in the Marvel universe outside of his quick cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine, unless he loses yet another iconic role!
