Bermuda vigilant as Potential Cyclone 5 approaches Leeward Islands

Officials on Bermuda are keeping a close eye on Potential Tropical Cyclone Five as the system churns several hundred kilometres east-south-east of the Leeward Islands.

In a statement, Minister of National Security Michael Weeks commented: “While Tropical Cyclone Five does not pose an immediate threat to Bermuda given its predicted path, it is crucial that we remain vigilant as it approaches us.”

Forecasters expect the storm to be southeast of Bermuda by the weekend, with the potential to develop into a Category Two hurricane.

Weeks assures the public that the Government and the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) are taking all necessary precautions.

He stated: “The EMO has scheduled a meeting of its executive team for Wednesday to ensure that all relevant agencies are fully prepared for any potential impact this weekend.”

Minister Weeks has emphasised the importance of early preparation and strongly advises residents to take the storm seriously.

Weeks said: “We urge all residents to begin their storm preparations now. Please ensure that your properties are secure by removing loose debris and outdoor furniture, checking on your neighbours and the elderly to ensure that they are prepared and informed, stocking up on necessary supplies, including medicine and making arrangements to secure pets.

“For those with boats, please make arrangements to secure them in advance. Additionally, it is critical that residents review and update their home insurance policies, ensuring that both home contents and property damage are covered.

Weeks called on islanders to prepare themselves for any possibilities as storms could change course and intensify suddenly.
