New US Trailer for Hathaway & Chastain’s Thriller ‘Mothers’ Instinct’

“Did you put Theo on that balcony to test me?” “Do you think I’m capable of that?” Neon has debuted a new official US trailer for Mothers’ Instinct, a psychological thriller marking the feature directorial debut of French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme. This is adapted from Barbara Abel’s novel of the same name. Mothers’ Instinct is a dark, twisty domestic thriller in which the bond between two couples—best friends and next-door neighbors—mutates in dangerous and deadly ways in the wake of a tragic accident. Alice and Celine live a traditional lifestyle with their husbands, and sons of the same age. Life’s perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond. Starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as Celine and Alice, respectively, with Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Caroline Lagerfelt. The film already opened in Europe in March earlier this year (here’s the other UK trailer) though it’s just now getting a US release this month. Still looks like it’s a tad too melodramatic (plus it got panned with a rotten 55% on RT so far). Not sure this’ll be worth a watch.

Starring Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain & Anne Hathaway, Mothers’ Instinct is an unnerving psychological thriller about two best friends and neighbors, Alice and Céline, whose perfect lives in ‘60s suburbia are shattered by a tragic accident involving one of their children. Marking the directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Benoit Delhomme, we follow Alice and Céline as their familial bonds are gradually undermined by guilt and paranoia and a gripping battle of wills develops, revealing the darker side of maternal love. Mothers’ Instinct is directed by French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme, making his directorial debut after years of work as a DP, including on the films Lawless, A Most Wanted Man, The Theory of Everything, At Eternity’s Gate, Minamata, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover previously. The screenplay is written by Sarah Conradt-Kroehler, adapted from the novel written by Barbara Abel. It’s produced by Jacques-Henri Bronckart, Kelly Carmichael, Jessica Chastain, & Paul Nelson. The film already opened in the UK in March and most of Europe in April earlier this year. Neon will release Mothers’ Instinct in select US theaters on July 26th, 2024 this summer, then on VOD starting August 13th coming soon.
