The Wire actor Wendell Pierce was decidedly not among the fans celebrating the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ turnaround victory against the New York Yankees in the World Series Game 5. Despite being a self-described supporter of both teams, he left the Yankees Stadium matchup early due to “unruly, obnoxious” fans who he said ruined his experience.
Taking to X yesterday, the Suits actor began his series of tweets posted Oct. 30 with a video explaining his Yankees hat and attire, saying that since he was in the team’s hometown he was cheering for the East Coast players. “Let’s hope it’s as exciting as Game 1,” he said.
However, not two hours later, the MLB fan said he was forced to exit the stadium: “Unfortunately I just left the Yankees game because I was talking to a Dodgers fan and people were throwing things at me. Unruly, obnoxious people can ruin everything. The worst experience ever. The game and experience is of no significance now. The spirit of sports ends with the ugliness of humanity.”
The Jack Ryan‘s laments come amid headline-making news of fans’ rowdy behavior. In Game 4, also held at Yankees Stadium and resulting in a victory for the home team, a Yankees fan’s wrenching of a caught ball out of Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts’ glove resulted in his banning from Game 5. Following the Dodgers’ clinching of the MLB championship, Betts admitted in a post-game interview that it was “like the second time in my life I’ve ever wanted to fight someone,” though the athlete was able to shrug off the jarring moment.
In a follow-up tweet, Pierce admonished people who had come to the game to “act an ass” and take away from pro players’ “artistry” and athleticism. “It will mean nothing to me because all I remember will be the obnoxious fans I had to avoid. @Yankees,” he wrote.
“The complete opposite of the Olympic experience when competition is celebrated because of the level of expertise,” he added. While Pierce noted he will “remember” the players, the game itself meant “nothing.” He said, “The World Series is over for me. I could [sic] care less about its outcome.”
Coming back to the social media platform, Pierce shared a video of himself celebrating the Dodgers’ victory from Game 1, congratulating the team on its first win in four years. In a stunning triumph, the West Coast team caught up on a 5-0 deficit to clinch the title, winning 7-6.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time rowdy fans have made headlines at Yankees Stadium. Two years ago, the East Coast team’s fans made news during a matchup against the Cleveland Guardians, whose outfielders were pelted by debris after a New York win. “Worst fanbase on the planet,” Myles Straw said at the time.
As for Pierce, it was just announced that the actor would return to the Jack Ryan universe as Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new feature with John Krasinski returning as the eponymous star.
