Shooting reported in New York, several people injured

ROCHESTER, New York — Six people were injured when they were shot early Sunday during a shooting in a park in Rochester, New York, police said. None of the injured are believed to be in mortal danger.

Rochester Police Chief David Smith said at least one person began shooting into a crowd of people during an argument at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park in Manhattan Square around 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the victims were a 17-year-old boy; three men aged 18, 21 and 33, and two women aged 20 and 25.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, but police charged a man who they said got into a fight with officers as they responded to the shooting. An officer was injured while attempting to detain the man and was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to Smith.

The 38-year-old man was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree obstruction of public administration, resisting arrest and second-degree harassment, Smith said.

“When you have people actively fighting with officers who are trying to provide medical care, it obviously makes things much more difficult,” Smith said at a news conference on Sunday.
