New Report Reveals Shocking Reason Sydney Sweeney Joined The Cast Of ‘Madame Web’

Sydney Sweeney was playing the long game! A new report reveals why the Euphoria star was cast in the infamous flop that was Madame Web.

The days of actors joining superhero movies purely for the love of the game has long past. While there are certainly still plenty that truly love the world and the characters, it has also become clear that these comic blockbusters are the fastest way to make a check. This has never been more true than with Sony’s slate of Spider-Man films, with actors like Jared Harris revealing they only starred in projects like Morbius because they needed the money.

Many assumed the same was true with the cast of Madame Web. For as bad as the film was, it was chocked full with genuinely fantastic actors like Adam Scott, Isabela Merced, and Sydney Sweeney. The obvious answer as to why they would join a film that seemed doomed to fail from the start was that they were in it for the money. However, it seems at least one star had different motives when signing her contract for the project.

The Real Reason Sydney Sweeney Joined Madame Web

There’s been a lot of speculation about why exactly Sydney Sweeney was cast in Madame Web, especially given her current close relationship with Sony Pictures. The true answer seems to come from a new article from The Hollywood Reporter, which reveals that the actress only agreed to star in the film to grease the wheels on production for Anyone But You, a romantic comedy she produced and starred in alongside Glen Powell.

Ironically, Anyone But You ended up being a massive money maker for Sony Pictures, grossing $200 million off a $25 million budget. Meanwhile, Madame Web was a disastrous flop, costing a reported $100 million (not counting marketing) and only barely crossing that threshold worldwide. So even though her inaugural superhero outing may have been a flop, it’s clear Sydney Sweeney backed the right horse when joining the cast.

Madame Web is now streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
