Inappropriate media content now tops complaints to CA

Complaints of ‘inappropriate media content’ have emerged as the most registered grievances to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) in the three months to June this year, overtaking traditionally dominant petitions to the regulator.

Latest statistics from the sector regulator reveal that complaints about “inappropriate media content” surged to 44 in the quarter to June this year, up from zero in the previous two quarters.

Such complaints are traditionally rare in CA’s cases under consideration, with only six being recorded in the three months to September last year. Only four cases were recorded in the January-March 2023 quarter.

In total, 50 complaints of ‘bad’ content on different media platforms, including social media, were sent to the CA over the year to June 2024, representing a more than ten-fold increase from the four reported in the entire 2022/23 financial year.

This pushed this category of complaints to the top spot in CA’s list, replacing confidentiality or privacy breaches and data service quality, which have always dominated the list of complaints to the regulator.

Over the period, complaints about the quality of service fell five percent to 20 from 21 the previous quarter, while grievances over privacy and confidentiality breaches dropped to 24 from 25 the previous period, a 4 percent slide.
