Bermuda: Police appeal for leads after double murder in Sandy’s Parish

Two men were murdered yesterday in Bermuda.

At a media conference following the incident, Superintendent Sherwin Joseph said at 6:05am police were called to the crime scene in Fort Scaur Hill, Sandy’s Parish.

When officers arrived, they found the two young men, whose identities were not revealed, with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

An ambulance took the men to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and they died while receiving treatment.

Joseph said forensic evidence “which suggests a firearm incident took place” were collected from the crime scene.

He asked residents of the Fort Scaur Hill area with CCTV cameras to review their footage.

“You may have captured material, video, photographs, et cetera, that may be able to assist our investigation,” he said.

Information can be provided to Detective Sergeant Anneka Donawa at 717-2250 or ddonowa@bps.bm or through the BPS Community Reporting Portal or by call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 800-8477.

Joseph added police are following a few leads in the matter.

Meanwhile, Deputy police commissioner Antoine Daniels lamented the state of crime on the small British Overseas Territory, highlighting that seven murders were recorded since Bermuda Day in May.

He said police will be increasing their efforts in the lead up to the annual Cup Match cricket tournament.

Islanders can expect to see more traffic checkpoints and increased patrols particularly in North East Hamilton, Friswells Hill and Sandys communities.

Police will also be targeting known offenders.

Acting Police Commissioner Na’imah Astwood has called for islanders to remain calm following the murders.

“I understand the fear and uncertainty that these incidents have brought upon all of us. Please know that the Bermuda Police Service is fully committed to thoroughly investigating and bringing clarity to the circumstances surrounding these incidents.

“I want to reassure you that we are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of our community. The wellbeing of each and every resident of Bermuda is of utmost importance to us, and we are dedicated to provide you with the support and protection you rightfully deserve.”

Astwood urged islanders to be responsible in their postings on social media, urging against spreading false information about the crime.

“We must remember that premature speculation and misinformation can have serious consequences and hinder the efforts to provide the community with accurate information and a thorough investigation,” she said.
