BBC’s New Thriller Nightsleeper Hooks Audiences Onboard

Nightsleeper is a new six-part thriller series from BBC One, created by BAFTA-winning writer Nick Leather. The series, which premiered on September 15, 2024, is set on a sleeper train traveling from Glasgow to London, creating a gripping real-time drama as passengers face an escalating crisis onboard. The plot follows a former detective, Joe Roag (played by Joe Cole), and Abby Aysgarth (Alexandra Roach), the acting technical director of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, as they work to save the train’s passengers from a life-threatening situation.

Joe Cole, known for his roles in Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London, takes on the central role of Roag, a man accused of theft and on the run, while Alexandra Roach (No Offence and Sanditon) plays Abby, who is dragged into a national security emergency just as she prepares for a holiday. Other cast members include David Threlfall (Shameless), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), and James Cosmo (Game of Thrones). Actor Alex Ferns, known for British soap opera EastEnders, is also one of the stars of new BBC thriller Nightsleeper.

“I know we bang this drum a lot on the podcast but #Nightsleeper feels like the ideal drama to wait a week per episode rather than binging all at once but inevitably everyone who enjoyed it will be heading straight to the iPlayer,” TV writer Matt Donnelly recently said on X.

The series stands out for its real-time format, which adds a sense of urgency and heightens the suspense, much like 24 or Unstoppable. Leather, who also wrote the acclaimed The Control Room, crafts a tense narrative filled with political maneuvering, personal intrigue, and high-stakes action.

Nightsleeper combines elements of high-stakes political thrillers with personal dramas, making it a must-watch for fans of suspenseful and action-packed narratives. All six episodes are available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
