19 arrested over Bermuda Day weekend amid spike in knife incidents

Over the Bermuda Day holiday weekend, police made 19 arrests and reported five knife-related incidents.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels, expressed concern, stating, “Police are always concerned about any incident, whether it’s the first holiday of the year or the first day of the year, involving firearms and knives. That demonstrates within our small island community that there are persons who share some kind of animosity towards each other and the first step they’re taking towards resolution is picking up a knife or a firearm.”

A police spokesperson also told local media that, “There were also 3 other incidents over the weekend involving bladed articles, resulting in two further victims being treated at the hospital and released for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Authorities reported that in 2023, there were 25 incidents involving bladed weapons. In 2024, there have been 16 such incidents so far, with less than five months completed.

Additionally, there have been 31 arrests for bladed articles in 2024, compared to 58 arrests last year.
